Category: "Editorials, Men's Leisure"…for men in the Adventure Province
1. Off road driving in the Baviaanskloof
The Baviaanskloof is virtually untouched by modern infrastructure and the result is kilometres of gravel roads up to 78km in length ideal for 4×4 vehicles, dirt bikes, and four-wheelers.
Experienced and amateur off-road vehicle owners can tackle this route themselves while those without can book a trip with one of the many 4×4 trip operators in the area.
2. Fishing on the Wild Coast
The Eastern Cape’s warm waters provide great fishing spots along the entire coast, but none as fruitful as the Wild Coast. Game fish such as barracuda, galjoen, mackerel, kob, and musselcracker flourish off this rugged stretch of coast.
Deep-sea charters are available here as well as rock, surf, fly and spear fishing.
3. Paintball
The world’s safest combat sport is a fantastic form of stress relief and has quickly become a popular day out for men and their friends.
Camouflage outfits, matching masks and paint as a stinging weapon amounts to the ideal male dream. Games such as Capture the Flag, Fox and Hound, Elimination and Predator provide opportunities for daring tactics.
4. Watching sport – live!
Instead of spending precious weekend hours indoors watching sport on television, there are various provincial or club matches in rugby, cricket and soccer to attend at stadiums around the province.
Cricket fans can attend the St. Georges and Buffalo Park stadiums to catch the Chevrolet Warriors in summer; while soccer and rugby fans can find plenty of club matches to attend in winter.
5. D-I-Y game drives
The cheapest way to view South African wildlife is available just around the corner for the price of no more than R30 per South African citizen – if you drive it yourself (DIY).
Addo Elephant, Camdeboo (near Graaff- Reinet) and Mountain Zebra (near Cradock) National Parks house various rare and exciting animals such as black rhino, Cape buffalo, cheetah, Cape mountain zebra, elephants, and lions.
6. Playing poker
A popular and fun time with the boys is a relaxed night of poker.
Playing at an unlicensed gambling location means that nothing of value may be wagered, but those wanting to gamble (responsibly) with money can head to Hemmingway’s or The Boardwalk casinos.
7. Golf
One of the top male leisure sports of all is golf due to its relaxed pace and social atmosphere.
The Eastern Cape is home to a few world-class courses such as the Gary Player-designed Fish River and Bushman Sands courses, as well as Humewood, Port Elizabeth, East London and West Bank golf courses just to name a few.
8. Camping
The pace of the metropolitan city is easily calmed after a visit to one of the Eastern Cape’s dozens of camp sites.
From the lush forests of the Tsitsikamma, to the high mountains of the Amatola, and the ocean views along the magnificent coastline, there is a camp spot for everyone.
Favourite activities include hiking and mountain biking through the unique Eastern Cape landscape.
9. Surfing, paddling, boogieboarding, sun-bathing on the Sunshine Coast Eastern Cape residents are privileged to have permanent access to the watersports Mecca coastline of the continent.
Surfing in Jeffrey’s Bay, yachting in Port Elizabeth and paddle-skiing in East London are just some of the favourite sea sports.
The less adventurous still take full advantage of the warm and safe bays on the coast to enjoy boogie-boarding or simply bathing in the sun.

10. Canoeing
The Eastern Cape has a number of long rivers that provide great canoe trails.
The paddling capital is Cradock where the Fish River Canoe Marathon takes place, but there are also scenic overnight canoe trails on the Sunday’s, Kowie, Bushman’s, Keiskama, Kei, Double Mouth and Nqabara rivers.
